This is my impression of "A is for Alibi" by Sue Grafton. Mind you I read it about a year ago, so this is based on my sketchy memory.
Overall the book was gritty, fast paced, and a quick read. The characters were believable, but just that, no more than you'd expect. The dialogue was much catchier than the main character's monologue. To me, that means she fleshed out the supporting characters just right. The cliches and crime thriller climaxes were hurried, but the nuances of investigative work were appealing. I didn't make all the connections but was able to follow the long trail that the main character took. The main character seemed a little shallow, but the fast pace made up for that. Maybe we'll see her interact with the same characters, and get to know her a little better in later books.
